Playlists: Collaborate, Chat, Vote, Drag From Spotify

This is the biggest change to Like.fm since we began working on the new version: playlists.

Instead of posting songs to your profile, you can create playlists and invite your friends to add songs (they don’t need to sign-in), or just share your mix with them. Everything that happens—new songs, likes, chat messages—will update in real-time (that means instantly, without refreshing the page).

Creating a playlist is as simple as setting a title. Adding songs is as simple as before, except now you can also paste YouTube and SoundCloud links straight into the chat box. If you use Spotify, feel free to just drag and drop songs directly into the Like.fm window when you’re on a playlist. If you find something you like on Like.fm, just drag the song on to a playlist to repost the song, or hit the repost button.

We’ve also improved playback of songs. Playlists will shuffle without repeats, starting with the most liked songs. So vote songs up by clicking the Like button to make sure they get played for others first.

We have deprecated the browser extensions. We do have a bookmarklet and you can extend that for sites if you want.

Updated Charts Ranking Algorithm

We’ve updated the ranking algorithm for charts so that fresher items will bubble to the top.

Please only post emerging artists to the emerging chart. If your post is on topic, you’ll get many reposts and listens.

Post Songs to the Emerging and Coding Charts

We’ve streamlined discovery on Like.fm by trimming our charts down to two: Emerging and Coding songs.

Select a chart when you post a song and within minutes your post will be placed on the chart in front of all Like.fm users for them to repost. More reposts means the song will bubble up to the top of the chart. The *first* user to post the song on Like.fm will get credit on the chart.

Expand Videos

We’ve added a button to toggle to a bigger video. It’s the icon in the bottom left of the player bar.

The video will expand to fill up the browser window and is even bigger than the big video player we had before.

Some Bug Fixes for 6/24/2012

We fixed the issue with Hype Machine and Billboard Hot 100 song posts lacking hover previews. We also fixed the missing audio and preview issue when reposting songs from either of these two accounts.

The Postmarklet (bookmarklet) also had a bug after the recent updates that prevented the data fields from being filled out for you. This has been fixed. You can get the Postmarklet at http://like.fm/signup/download.

Today we accidentally reset all song previews. Your songs will still have previews, but they have reverted to the default previews we automatically select. You can fix song previews by going to your profile page and clicking the “Edit” button for any song that has been reset to the wrong preview audio. We apologize for any inconvenience,

Uninterrupted Audio While You Browse

With our last update of the new item page light-boxes, you might have thought that you could continue browsing the site after you started playing a song. Unfortunately that was only one-half of the update we intended to push out and clicking on any links on the site would reload the page, interrupting your audio.

That being said, this post announces the arrival of the other half of that update, bringing the function to consistency with the user interface. You can now safely continue browsing Like.fm even after you start playing a song, and it won’t be interrupted anymore.

New Complete Audio Control and SoundCloud Support

After selecting a song, you now have complete control over the full song that’s played or the preview that plays when someone hovers over the song.

We’ve added two select boxes that let you pick from a selection of YouTube, SoundCloud, or 30 second sample clips that we’ve automatically guessed for your chosen song. You can also paste a URLs to a specific YouTube video or SoundCloud audio page to get the exact one you want.

You can now also skip having to pick a song by directly pasting a SoundCloud URL (works with a YouTube URL as well, which we’ve supported for a while now) into the song selection box and have the song automatically detected for you.

Introducing: Stacks

Stacks are an easy way to automatically categorize and organize songs based on the tags you attach to every song. If you wanted to feature all “indie rock” songs, for example, you might create a stack with the tags “indie” and “rock.” Then all songs containing both the tags “indie” and “rock” will automatically appear in your stack. Tags can be any text you want, which means you can also specify the single tag “indie rock.”

You can create up to eight stacks to feature on your profile and they are non-destructive, which means you can delete your “indie rock” stack and be able to instantly recover the stack just by specifying the tag again.

This is a powerful feature and we hope you can come up with great new ways we haven’t even imagined for organizing your music.

To start you off we’ve pre-tagged all of your music so you can start stacking songs just by specifying tags.

Seamless Transitions

We’ve upgraded the audio player to support crossfading when the next song starts.

Click on a song to play the whole song. Wait until the end to hear it transition to the next song by crossfading.

Automatic Song Tags

We do realize tags don’t do anything on the site yet, but they are about to be the basis of some cool new stuff.

Better & More Accurate Song Previews

We’ve drastically improved the automatic song preview system so that extremely new songs or obscure songs and remixes will now have previews when you hover over them.

In particular, The Hype Machine’s songs should have previews more accurately assigned from now on.

Liking songs

We just added the ability to “Like” a song.

You can use this to let someone know you like a song without having to repost it to your profile. You can also use it to save a song in case you want to post it later. Recent likes are shown as a list on your profile.

Fixed the Chrome Extension

We had a bug for several days that prevented the Chrome Extension from detecting most songs, especially on YouTube.

This has been fixed and all songs will now be detected properly.

The Chrome extension no longer checks Amazon so it should not affect your Amazon product recommendations anymore.

The updated version number is 1.2.1. You can force an update by typing “chrome://extensions” into the Chrome address bar, and then clicking the “Update extensions now” button.

Facebook crossposts now embeds YouTube video

YouTube videos will be directly embedded in the Facebook post if you have Facebook cross-posting turned on.

Added a basic search that lets you find a song and then find other users who have posted that song.

You can also click on the artist or song title in a square to find other people who have posted that song.

Hopefully this leads you to some new music.

Bug fix: Wrong YouTube videos for certain posts

We just fixed a bug where the wrong YouTube video is set if you post from YouTube using the Postmarklet or Chrome extension, or if you paste a specific YouTube URL. This bug occurred if you did this and the song wasn’t automatically detected.
